Change--Taylor Swift

Lyrics:

Vs1)And it's a sad picture
The final blow hits you
Somebody else gets what you wanted again
You know, it's all the same
Another time and place
Repeating history and you're getting sick of it
But I believe in whatever you do
And I'll do anything to see it through
Chs)Because these things will change
Can you feel it now?
These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down
It's a revolution
The time will come for us to finally win
And we'll sing hallelujah
We'll sing hallelujah
Vs2)So we've been outnumbered
Rated, and now cornered
It's hard to fight when the fight ain't fair
We're getting stronger now
Find things they never found
They might be bigger, but we're faster and never scared
You can walk away, say we don't need this
But there's something in your eyes, says we can beat this
Chs)Because these things will change
Can you feel it now?
These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down
It's a revolution
The time will come for us to finally win
And we'll sing hallelujah
We'll sing hallelujah
Brdge)Tonight we'll stand
Get off our knees
Fight for what we've worked for all these year
The battle was long
It's the fight of our lives
But we'll stand up champions tonight
Chs)It was the night things changed
Can you feel it now?
These walls that they put up to hold us back fell down
It's a revolution
Throw your hands up 'cause we never gave in
And we'll sing hallelujah
We sang hallelujah
Hallelujah

Meaning:

I think this song is a good every-day inspirational song. It's main message is that you shouldn't give up. I'm in a hurry, so I won't break it down completely, but...Things will be hard. Things won't be fair. You'll want to throw all your effort away and just give in, because the fight is something so vigorous, it's hard to keep up with. But all we ask is patience. Because waiting is everything. Wait a little longer; one more day, one more week, one more month or year or however long. Yeah, it'll seem like that amount of time will never end. I promise though, if you keep on fighting the victory will taste that much sweeter. And if the fight is really something that is important, you will win. One way or another, you will win. Casualties are nothing compared to the magnificance of knowing that was your very last battle, and you made it out in one piece. So I'll say it again. Don't. Give. Up.

Already Home--Thousand Foot Krutch

Lyrics:

Vs1) The trouble with truth is it never lies
And the trouble with wrong's that it's never right
So I rest my head under your light
The trouble with peace is it never fights
And the trouble with love's that it's always blind
I wanna' walk to the edge of it tonight
And I fall down
Chs) I am on my knees
'Cause you're everything I need
And I've made a mess of myself
On my own
And now I am on my face
And I'm calling out your name
And I won't run away
'Cause I'm already home
Vs2) The trouble with tears is that they dry
And the trouble with this made me wanna' cry
I've never felt so much like I'm alive
I wanna'
Open my eys and see your face
If I have to wait a thousand days
To still be right here, right next to you
And I fall down
Chs) I am on my knees
'Cause you're everything I need
And I've made a mess of myself
On my own
And now I am on my face
And I'm calling out your name
And I won't run away
'Cause I'm already home
And I won't run away
I won't run away
I won't run away
'Cause I'm already home
Bridge) And I know
I haven't
Always been
Where you wanted me
Standing here
Arms out
Broken down
Before you
I know
I havent
Always been
Where you wanted me
Standing here
Arms out
Broken down
Chs) I am on my knees
'Cause you're everything I need
And I've made a mess of myself
On my own
And now I am on my face
And I'm calling out your name
And I won't run away
'Cause I'm already home

Meaning:

This is a very peaceful song to me, and it speaks a lot to my heart. That first chorus I think you can take a number of ways. But the way I'm going to explain is that nothing is perfect. In our life, it's like we need this sort of balance with good and bad. And we can't have too much of one thing (like peace of love or wrong) or else it isn't proper to us. It is too confusing and something we can't put our faith in or else we'll find ourselves on the brink of insanity. The only thing that is worth counting on is God. But the chorus is the explanation of exactly that: God is what we need. The singer says that he's made mistakes before and messed up his life, and he is calling out to God because God is home. God is safety in the storm; shelter for the homeless; food for the weak...He contains all sanctity and preciousness and love. We fall on our knees, on our face, to call for God because we know how broken we are. And we won't run away because there is nowhere else good enough to run to. I think the second verse is a little happier. The singer's tears are a symbol of his happiness, and he is saying that he just wants to be with God because it is what makes him more alive than anything he's every experienced. The bridge states that we aren't always going to be right on the mark, but we'll still be before God. And that is all that matters. We are forgiven and loved, and it won't make a difference how many times we screw it up. God will always be there, in our hearts, where true home lies.

Reasons Why--Nickel Creek

Lyrics:

Vs1)Where am I today? I wish that I knew.
'Cause looking around there's no sign of you.
I don't remember one jump or one leap.
Just quiet steps away from your lead.
I'm holding my heart out, but clutching it too.
Feeling this short of the love that we once knew.
Calling this home when it's not even close.
And playing the role with nerves left exposed.
Chs)Standing on your darkest day.
Stumbling through the lies.
Others have excuses,
I have my reasons why.
Vs2)We get distracted by the dreams of our own.
Nobody's happy while feeling alone.
Knowing how hard it hurts when we fall.
Lean another ladder against the wrong wall.
Chs)And climb high to the highest rock
To shake fists at the sky.
Others have excuses,
I have my reasons why.
Brdge)With so much perception,
It's hard not to wander away.
(Hard not to wander away.)
It's hard not to wander away.

Meaning:

This song meant a lot to me while I lived in Pennsylvania for 10 months, and I thinking the meaning still holds relatively the same. The first verse, how I took it at least, is saying that there's this person that doesn't know where they went wrong. Things aren't how they used to be, and they aren't following God like they know they should be. They don't remember how things got off-course, but they did. When I thought about it, I thought about how I would say Pennsylvania was "home," but it didn't even compare to where my heart was. And I was "playing the role" of being okay and going through the motions, when my nerves were "exposed" and so frayed I could hardly keep my inside together. The first chorus explains how lost we are, stumbling through the lies we try and keep and the darkness that surrounds us. And we always give the excuse that we have our reasons, when we all know that it no reason is good enough to shame ourselves with what we are doing. The second verse kind of explains more of that excuse; we get distracted, we can't be happy if we're alone, and we don't want to fall and face the pain. Then it says the last line, which I don't think is one of the "reasons," just the truth of the matter. They are leaning their hope, the ladder of who they are and how they cooperate, on another wrong wall; something else that won't really support us. The second chorus talks about our reactions. We climb to the highest rocks, we find our alone places, and we scream at the sky. We ask God how he could let us feel this way and bring us down. The bridge says that we have so much perception, and it's hard trying to stay focused. They repeat that it's "hard not to wander away." Yes. It is hard. But he told us it would be, and he's there every step of the way. The only trick is, he isn't going to force himself on us. We are free to choose what we want, and if we don't want him, he's not going to give himself to us. And the easiest thing we could ever do, is just ask him to pick us up. Because we aren't strong enough, no matter how many times we lie and tell everybody that we are. And we don't know this world, no matter how much we like to believe we do. It's God, and God only, that can get us through life.

Hold Fast--Mercy Me

Lyrics:

(Vs 1) To everyone who's hurting
To those who've had enough
To all the undeserving
That should cover all of us
Please do not let go
I promise there is hope
(Chs) Hold fast, help is on the way
Hold fast, He's come to save the day
What I've learned in my life
One thing greater than my strife
Is His grasp
So hold fast
(Vs 2) Will this season never pass?
Can we stop this ride?
Will we see the sun at last?
Or could this be our lot in life?
Please do not let go
I promise you there's hope
(Chs) Hold fast, help is on the way
Hold fast, He's come to save the day
What I've learned in my life
One thing greater than my strife
Is Your grasp
So hold fast
(Brdg) You may think you're all alone
And there's no way that anyone could know
What you're going through
But if you only hear one thing
Just understand that we are all the same
Searching for the truth
The truth what we're soon to face
Unless someone comes to take our place
Is there anyone?
All we want is to be free
Free from our captivity
Lord, here He comes
(Chs) Hold fast, help is on the way
Hold fast, He's come to save the day
What I've learned in my lie
One thing stronger than my strife
Is Your grasp
So hold fast, help is on the way
Hold fast, He's come to save the day
What I've learned in my life
One thing greater than my strife
Is Your grasp
So hold fast

Meaning:

We are all in pain, we are all unworthy, we are all at our wits end and hoping for a single way out. This is a good song where the band is really trying to talk to their listeners. Their main point: hold fast. Don't give up, because remember that way out you were wishing for? Yeah, they know that it exists. They know the key to it. They know just how to get it, and what it involves. It's Jesus. As much as our world doesn't want to admit it, He really is the only way out of the desolation we put ourselves through. I got to experience firsthand what it was like to keep myself out of God's reign. I was in the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life; physically, emotionally, and mentally. And the only way I escaped any of it was giving myself up to God. It wasn't easy, but it was the most worthwhile thing I have done in my life. They say it perfectly: "One thing greater than my strife/Is His grasp..." The only thing able to conquer the all-consuming grief I had plunged into were the hands of Jesus pulling me out. Nothing beats the power of that love, coming right out and holding you. And that's what this song is about. About the hope Jesus brings, because He has saved us, and He will keep on doing it every time we ask.

Hey!

Vrai Lyrique, here. :) I just wanted to make a little note - if you guys have any requests or ideas or inputs on songs, let me know! I don't know all the songs in the world, and I know a lot of you know some pretty cool ones. So comment on my posts and tell me what you want to hear (or read). I'll be waiting for comments!

P.S. Try and make them appropriate songs, ones that are more on the uplifting side. Not a whole lot of cussing, if you don't mind. :) Thanks!

Look Away--Thousand Foot Krutch

Lyrics:

Vs1) She's everything to everyone
Wish I could've seen it go
Down but I heard incorrectly
It seems everything she knows
Is now five minutes 'till close
And that's not a lot of time when you're nervous
And they say
Daughter look away
Don't be afraid
When you wanna' turn back a million times
And it might get colder
But wait 'till it's over
Darlin' you'll find you're way
Chs) But she said I
Will not look away this time
Take all these cuts and make them shine
And all this pain I've held inside
So I can find my way home again
I will not look away this time
Take all these cuts and make them shine
Don't wanna' be perfect, just alright
Vs2) He's on his way to nowhere
'Cause he heard it was safe there
And safe is something valuable here
He spent have his life searching
And the other half working
Hard to find out if Jesus is real
And they said
Son look away
Don't be afraid
When you wanna' turn back a million times
And it might get colder
But wait 'till its over
Son, you will find your way
Chs) But he said I
Will not look away this time
Take all these cuts and make them shine
And all this pain I've held inside
So I can find my way home again
I will not look away this time
Take all these cuts and make them shine
Don't wanna' be perfect, just alright
Brdg) And every time
Every line
Every time you wanna' say goodbye, sing
Every time
Every line
Every time you wanna' say goodbye, sing
Chs) I will not look away this time
Take all these cuts and make them shine
And all this pain I've held inside
So I can find my way home again
I will not look away this time
Take all these cuts and make them shine
Don't wanna' be perfect, just alright
She's everything to everyone
Wish I could've seen it go
Down but I heard incorrectly
It seems everything she knows
Is now five minutes 'till close
And that's not a lot of time when you're nervous

Meaning:
Personally, I think this is a song filled with pain and hope all at the same time. The girl mentioned in the first verse, it sounds like she's so busy trying to keep up with life. When the day is done, she doesn't have any time for herself or anything that she holds dear. Everybody's telling her to just look away. Don't think about what you're going through. Because eventually, you'll learn how to deal with the sorrow. And as it leads into the chorus, she says "No". She's not going to pretend she's okay, and look the other way when her feelings aren't right. She's telling God to take all of her cuts, her memories, her heartache, and make them all worth something. Because she doesn't want to keep looking away until she's lost the path she wants to be on. And, like the line says, "Don't wanna' be perfect, just alright". She knows that perfection is out of the question, and she doesn't want it anyways. But she just wants to be happy again, to not be afraid. Then, the second verse introduces a man that is running because he doesn't like to be vulnerable. He likes to be safe. His whole life, he's spent living for somebody else, always wondering whether to believe in the stories of Jesus or not. And, just like the girl, people are telling him to look away. That it's okay that he's afraid and he doesn't know what he's doing. He just needs to keep going and he'll find something a little better. But he realizes that he doesn't want to look away. It's the same explanation as it was for the girl as the song moves to it's second chorus. The man wants God to take his cuts and make them shine. Then the band takes a time to speak out, to talk to the listeners. They tell us to not give up. Every time we feel like nobody cares, like we're better off saying goodbye to this world, sing that we can do it. Sing the lyrics to the song: "I will not look away this time." To tell God that he can take what we aren't proud of and make it into something better. Because we all need to find our ways home, and we all just need to be alright.

Extra Notes:
I just wanted to add an extra little bit on this one. I dedicate this song to a certain friend of mine, whose name I won't mention for privacy reasons. I love her so much, and I believe this song relates to her. She had told me a story once, of a time when she was going through a lot of crap. Her heart was so broken, and her life wasn't what she wanted it to be. I saw the cuts when she was telling me the story, and it made me almost sick. What would this world be without her? Who would I be? What would I do? Friend of mine - you are always worth the breaths that you take. You are beautiful, nice, funny, caring, passionate, you know how to love and how to laugh, and you make me laugh all the time. You brighten my days, and the days of many others. I love you beyond words, young lady. And I want you to know that when times get rough, I'm always here. And that pain inside can make you shine.

The Meaning in the Music

There's always a story behind a song. A legend in the lyrics. A meaning in the music. But sometimes the meaning is unclear, or there's different sides to what you're hearing. This blog is all about the music, and what is buried inside those words and tunes. Because music is a gift from God, and a beautiful one at that. And it should always be shared to brighten a day, to lift a smile, or to make a dark world seem brighter, if only for a little while. Love and peace, yours forever, Vrai Lyrique.
